FBI, which stands for Federal Bureau of Investigation (Fig. 1), is a government agency of the Department of Justice of the United States that serves as internal intelligence agency and an organ of federal criminal investigation. The FBI has jurisdiction over violations of more than 200 categories of federal crimes.
The motto is "Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity", which corresponds to its initials.
It was created in 1908 as Bureau of Investigation, but was changed to its current name in 1935.

The headquarters is located in Washington DC and is called J. Edgar Hoover Building (Fig. 2), has also spread across the country 56 local offices in major cities, as well as 380 in smaller cities and more than 60 international offices in the U.S. embassies around the world.
At this point, its Director is Robert S. Mueller III (Fig. 3) and the Deputy Director is Sean M. Joyce.

In the year 2012, the budget was 8.1 billion dollars, about 6 billion euros.
Its main goal is to protect and defend the U.S., maintain and enforce the criminal laws of the United States. Provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners.

Currently, their main priorities are:
- Protect the United States from terrorist attacks;
- Protect the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage;
- Protect the United States against cyber-based attacks and high-technology crimes;
- Combat public corruption at all levels;
- Protect civil rights;
- Combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprises;
- Combat major white-collar crime;
- Combat significant violent crime.
In August 2007 the main categories of criminal charges resulting from FBI investigations were:
- Bank robbery and incidental crimes (107 charges);
- Drugs (104 charges);
- Attempt and conspiracy (81 charges);
- Material involving sexual exploitation of minors (53 charges);
- Mail fraud – frauds and swindles (51 charges);
- Bank fraud (31 charges);
- Prohibition of illegal gambling businesses (22 charges);
- Fraud by wire, radio, or television (20 charges);
- Hobbs Act (Robbery and extortion affecting interstate commerce) (17 charges);
- Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO)–prohibited activities (17 charges).
